AML/CTF guides for small practices

Last checked 25 September 2026 against the AML/CTF Act compilation C2026C00274, the AML/CTF Rules 2025 (F2025L01026) and the Transitional Rules 2026 (F2026L00393)

Plain-English guides to the AML/CTF Act and the AML/CTF Rules 2025 for accounting practices, real estate agencies, conveyancers and legal practices. Each one cites the section it relies on and links to the authorised text, so you can check it yourself.

How to use these guides

Start with whether the Act applies to you. It depends on the services your firm provides, not on your job title or size. If it does apply, the program guides take you through each obligation in the order you need it, and the sector guides pull together what matters for your kind of practice.

Every legal statement carries a chip showing where it comes from:

Act s 51B the law, read in the authorised textAUSTRAC guidance the regulator's published guidance

A solid chip is the law, read in the authorised text on the Federal Register of Legislation. A dashed chip is AUSTRAC's published guidance, or a government estimate. Guidance is useful, but it is not the law. Links to AUSTRAC open in a new window, and linking to AUSTRAC does not mean AUSTRAC endorses these guides.

Dates that have passed are written as history, for example that enrolment was due on 29 July 2026 for firms already providing a covered service on 1 July 2026.

What these guides are not

They are general information, not legal advice. We do not act as your AML/CTF compliance officer, we do not lodge reports for you, and we do not carry out your independent evaluation. If you find an error in a citation, date or threshold, email [email protected] and we will correct it within 5 business days, at no cost.

For the practical side, go to your sector page: accounting practices, real estate agencies, conveyancers or legal practices. If you want the documents, AUSTRAC's starter kits are free; our kit builds on them for A$497, and our Set-up service tailors them from A$990. Not sure you are covered? Questions

How are these guides checked?

Every section number, Rules number, date and dollar figure is taken from a reference file built from the authorised texts opened at legislation.gov.au on 25 September 2026: the Act compilation C2026C00274, the AML/CTF Rules 2025 (F2025L01026) and the AML/CTF Transitional Rules 2026 (F2026L00393). Before a page is published, an automated check refuses it if it cites a section that is not in those texts or a figure that has been superseded. The sources page lists every instrument and AUSTRAC page we cite.

Are the guides legal advice?

No. They are general information. Each guide links to AUSTRAC's pages and to the authorised text so you can check every claim, and for anything close to the line you should ask a lawyer.

Why do older guides cite different section numbers?

The 2024 amending Act rewrote Part 1A of the Act from 31 March 2026. The program is now s 26B, the risk assessment s 26C, the policies s 26F and the compliance officer ss 26J to 26M, and the detail sits in the AML/CTF Rules 2025. Material written before then, including templates that describe a two-part program or cite the Rules by chapter, is out of date.
